While traveling home from Arizona last week my family and I had the opportunity to eat out a lot. I particularly enjoy eating at mom-and-pop restaurants because they are usually better than the big fast food chains. Plus, I can eat at fast food chains anytime, anywhere. One such mom-and-pop pit stop happened in Gunnison, Utah at the 5-Star Drive In.
5-Star Restaurant Serving 2-Star Food
Maybe the 3 teenagers running restaurant should have been my first clue that it wasn’t going to be too great. Or maybe it should have been that the only other restaurant patron at 6:15 pm was the local 10-year old troublemaker flirting with the 3 teenage employees (who subsequently recommended the fried cheese sticks as the best item on the menu).
Anyway, I ordered a Pastrami Burger to which the young server replied, “My dad orders that every time we come here.” That was slightly reassuring. My wife ordered the fish sandwich and we ordered kid meals for the young ‘uns. Our food arrived quickly and hot. Here’s the review:
Pastrami Burger – 2 Stars
One bite into my pastrami burger and you could taste the 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise over everything else. It had only 2 or 3 slices of pastrami and the hamburger patty was quite dry as well as the bun seemed a little crusty.
Fish Sandwich – 3 Stars
The fish sandwich my wife ordered was a little better as she shared a bite with me. It still had a lot of mayonnaise (or a mild tarter sauce?) and the fish was only slightly more quality than other fast-food fish sandwich establishments.
Fries – 4 Stars
The french fries were hot and crispy and by far the best item we ate.
Cheese Fries – 2 Stars
They were much too expensive for what you got (3 for $1.50), too salty and obviously a processed frozen food. The kid who referred them probably hadn’t tried anything else on the menu.
Kid’s Meals – ??
They came with a toy. The hot dogs were big, the chicken nuggets looked edible, and the grilled cheese sandwich my son got was only half of a sandwich on store-bought bread with cheap American cheese.
Overall the food was 2-Stars and I had the sour stomach afterwards to prove it.
